5 Red Flags That Scream 'Scammer' on Senior Dating Sites
Online dating after 50 can be wonderful. It can also be dangerous if you don’t know what to look for.
We analyzed 47 Trustpilot reviews and dozens of Reddit discussions about SeniorMatch. One theme kept appearing: scammers are active on the platform, and they’re targeting seniors specifically.
Here are the 5 red flags that appeared most often in real user reports.
1. Only One Photo — And It’s Too Perfect
Real people have multiple photos: casual shots, photos with friends, different settings. Scammers steal one professional headshot from a model or stock photo site.
All have ONE headshot photo. The one local profile near me reached out and gave very generic answers to my questions, so I suggested we meet up. She never responded. — Reddit user, r/relationship_thoughts
What to do: If someone has only one photo, ask for more. A genuine person will happily share additional pictures.
2. They Fall in Love Too Fast
Scammers don’t have time to build real connections. They need to hook you emotionally before you figure out what’s happening.
All the women start talking like they are in love and want off the app and ask my dad to delete it within several messages. Yes 99% likely working scams. — Reddit user, r/catfish
What to do: Be flattered but cautious. Real relationships develop over weeks, not days. If someone declares strong feelings before meeting you, slow down.
3. They Want to Move Off the Platform Immediately
SeniorMatch has messaging systems for a reason: they can monitor for scams. Once you move to email, text, or WhatsApp, that protection disappears.
I set parameters for 50 miles from my location and I got results from everywhere around the world EXCEPT from my state. — Reddit user
What to do: Stay on the platform until you’ve video chatted and feel confident they’re real. A genuine match will understand.
4. They’re Always Far Away or Overseas
Many users report matches who claim to be local but are actually overseas. Some claim to be soldiers deployed abroad, engineers on oil rigs, or businessmen on international assignments.
None of the matches that I received were even in my area. Most of the people were either halfway across the country per their profile or overseas. — Reddit user
What to do: If they can’t meet within a reasonable timeframe (2-4 weeks), they’re probably not who they say they are.
5. They Ask for Money — Any Amount, Any Reason
This is the ultimate red flag. Scammers build emotional connection, then manufacture emergencies: medical bills, travel costs, business problems, family crises.
One Reddit user reported a scammer who sent him gifts first ($100 flower bouquets, $150 pizza orders) to build trust before asking for Apple gift cards.
What to do: Never send money, gift cards, or financial help to someone you haven’t met in person. Ever. No matter how convincing their story.
What SeniorMatch Says
SeniorMatch has implemented real-time video verification for new profiles. This helps, but determined scammers still find ways through. The platform’s official response to scam complaints is to encourage users to report suspicious profiles.
Protect Yourself
- Video chat before meeting — verify they match their photos
- Never share financial information — no bank details, no gift cards
- Meet in public first — always for the first few dates
- Tell a friend — let someone know where you’re going
- Trust your gut — if something feels wrong, it probably is
The Bottom Line
Scammers are a reality on SeniorMatch and every dating platform. But they’re not invincible. With these red flags in mind, you can spot them quickly and focus on the genuine connections that do exist.
The platform has 36,600+ success stories for a reason. Real people do find love there. Just stay smart while you look.
