Free senior dating sites: what free actually lets you do
Eight services, one question: can a free member write to someone first? On SeniorMatch, SilverSingles, OurTime and Stitch, no. Plenty of Fish and Match open messaging once both people have liked each other. Facebook Dating and eharmony let a free member send first: eharmony caps how many, and Facebook opens a full chat only after a like back. Free all the way has its own price: AARP's survey of 300 adults aged 50 and older found that people using only free platforms were "about 10 percent more likely" to meet fake profiles.

What a free account can do on each service
Every cell carries a tag. inside means we read it in a logged-in account. public means the company prints it on its own page, and we kept the URL and the date. not verified means no public page stated it in words, so we left it blank rather than guess. Only SeniorMatch and SilverSingles are inside, and those two share a parent company, SuccessfulMatch.com, Inc.
| Service | Create a profile | Browse members | Start a message | Reply to a message | Distance filter | Verification | The price of the free tier |

| Stitch | Free ("Limited") public | Not stated not verified | No, chat needs paid Full public | Yes, once verified public | Not stated not verified | Required before messaging public | $7 a month or $60 a year, in conflict public |
Read the fourth column first, because it decides whether free is enough for you. Four of the eight block the first message outright for a free member, two open it only once both people have liked each other, and two let you send first, then limit what comes next: eharmony caps a free member's messages, and Facebook opens a full chat only after the other person likes you back.
Then read the last column. Five of the eight will not print a price anywhere until you have registered, so on those five "free to join" is the only number you can compare beforehand.
SeniorMatch: free to look, free to answer, paid to speak first
The free SeniorMatch account does not expire. It holds 26 public photos and 26 private ones, and it searches by country and state for as long as you keep it.
Winks are the free signal, and they are rationed. You get 20 a day for your first three days, then 40 a day after that.
Replying is free, writing first is not. The SeniorMatch FAQ entry for standard members, dated 13 July 2026, puts the rule in one line: "at least one person in a conversation must have an active PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP for messaging to remain available".
That rule has a second consequence people usually meet later, which is that a thread closes when the Premium member in it stops paying. Two free members who like each other can wink back and forth for months and never exchange a word.
Distance is the other limit. Free search narrows to a country and a state, so a free member in Texas is looking at all of Texas rather than at the towns within driving distance, and the distance slider sits with the rest of the advanced filters behind Premium. Those filters revert to default the day Premium runs out.

Lifting both limits costs $33.99 a month, read at checkout inside the account on 16 September 2026. The refund window afterwards is 3 business days.
Verification is one thing the free tier does get, and it applies to everyone: a selfie video of 3 to 8 seconds has been mandatory since 14 April 2025, so the face on a profile has been matched against a live recording. It is not a background check, and SeniorMatch says so in capitals: "NO CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENING". Each rule in this section is set out at more length on what a free SeniorMatch account can and cannot do.
SilverSingles: the same restrictions, a very different price
SilverSingles runs the same software as SeniorMatch, down to the wording of the FAQ, the 3-business-day refund clause and the advanced filter panel that resets when the paid tier expires.
Its free tier behaves the same way too: you can register and look, you cannot send the first message, and the paid privileges list runs to 33 items against SeniorMatch's 40.
The difference is the number on the checkout page. Read inside a SilverSingles account on 16 September 2026, one month was $499 and three months were $999. SeniorMatch charges $33.99 a month to lift the same restriction; the SeniorMatch cost page has the three- and six-month plans and the refund window.
You cannot see that number before you register. SilverSingles' public pricing page redirects to the homepage when you are logged out, which we checked again on 17 September 2026. If a free SilverSingles signup is what brought you here, that is the one thing to find out first, because the site will not show you $499 until you are already inside it.
Plenty of Fish and Facebook Dating: free all the way, and what that costs
Plenty of Fish works on mutual liking. Its help page on Mutual Matches, read on 17 September 2026, says: "You'll swipe and like profiles, creating what we call Mutual Matches. Then you're free to message as much as you'd like with that match!" So a free member there is not silenced, but the other person has to like you back first. See the Plenty of Fish terms of use for the rest.
Selfie Verification on Plenty of Fish is optional, which is the reverse of the SeniorMatch rule. An unverified Plenty of Fish profile is an ordinary profile, though its help pages say you can request Selfie Verification from someone before you meet them.
Facebook Dating is the only service here with nothing to buy. Its Help Center article, read on 18 September 2026, says: "In Dating you can send likes and messages to people you're interested in. Once someone likes you back, you'll match and can start chatting in Dating."
What it asks for instead is a Facebook account. Dating is 18 and over and needs an account in good standing that is at least 30 days old, so it is not a service you can join tonight if you have never used Facebook, and it lives inside the phone app with no website version.
Facebook asks for a selfie video when it wants to confirm a Dating profile, and its help page says the video "must match a photo on your profile". If you go looking for an App Store rating to judge it by, there is not one. Facebook Dating has no separate listing, and the 4.5 from 28.4 million ratings that turns up in searches is the score for the whole Facebook app.
What free costs, in AARP's numbers. AARP surveyed 300 adults aged 50 and older who use an online dating platform now or used one in the last three years. Nearly half of them, 48 percent, said they use free platforms only, most often Facebook Dating and then the free versions of Plenty of Fish and Tinder.
Two findings from that survey apply to any free signup. Across everyone surveyed, "41 percent of users said they encountered a fake profile or a person trying to scam them". And the free-only group fared worse: they were "about 10 percent more likely to report encountering fake profiles or receiving unsolicited sexually explicit messages". AARP publishes the "10 percent more likely" phrase without the two underlying rates, so that is as precise as the finding gets. Source: AARP, "The Best Dating Sites for Seniors Compared", page updated 24 August 2026, read 17 September 2026, aarp.org.
One thing we could not check. Neither company's public pages describe a distance filter in words, so we left that column blank for both rather than assume one exists. We also did not open an account on either service, so we make no claim about how much advertising a free member sees.
Between the two: if you already use Facebook and want no billing relationship with a dating company at all, Facebook Dating is the one to try, and the cost is an app on your phone. If you would rather your dating profile were not attached to your Facebook account, and you can wait for a like back before writing, Plenty of Fish does that, and its iOS listing carries 1,808,571 ratings, the largest count of any dating app in this group.
OurTime, Match, eharmony and Stitch
OurTime has the narrowest free tier of the eight. Its help article on the Reply for Free feature says the feature "allows free members to reply to paid subscriber emails", and then: "To email other Match members, you must purchase a subscription." So someone can write to a free OurTime member, but only after paying for the privilege of being answered. Your inbox there depends on another person's spending.
OurTime's terms also state that purchases are generally nonrefundable, with special terms in twelve US states, and it verifies photos with a video selfie. The OurTime terms of use carry both, read on 17 September 2026.
Match is more generous and more conditional. Its help article says: "All of our free members are now able to chat with every match! Once you match with someone, you can message each other directly." The same article adds that residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas and Oklahoma can message for free with all Mutual Matches. Match verifies by SMS, offers optional identity verification in some markets, and runs automated age and face photo checks on the main profile picture.
eharmony has the most useful free tier among the paid brands. Its homepage says a free member can "take the Compatibility Quiz, view members' profiles, send and receive initial likes and first messages, and see who's visited your profile", while its own cost page sets Basic's "Limited messaging" against Premium's "Unlimited messaging". So you can open a conversation without paying, and you will run out of that ability if it goes well.
eharmony's contract is with eHarmony, Inc., a Delaware corporation, and it grants a three-day cancellation right plus the same twelve-state special terms. See the eharmony terms and conditions.
Stitch is the outlier, and the one to look at if you would rather not be in a pool that starts at 18. Its terms say "You must be at least 50 years of age", the only minimum above 18 in this group. Its FAQ says "we require all members to verify their accounts with us before they can communicate with any other members through Stitch", and the free Limited tier can answer messages and contact activity organizers but needs the paid Full tier for member-to-member chat.
Stitch's own site does not agree with itself on price. Its pricing page calls Limited "Free Forever!" and Full "from $7 per month"; its FAQ lists "Community Basic membership, for $60 per year; Community Standard membership, for $120 per year; Community Manager membership, for $180 per year". Both pages were live on 17 September 2026 and we have not reconciled them, so treat the upgrade price as unsettled until Stitch fixes one of the two: stitch.net/pricing.
How to use a free SeniorMatch account to check your area
The free tier answers one question well: whether anyone near you is worth $33.99 a month. It takes about a week and it costs nothing.
- Register and set your state. Free search filters by country and state, so set both to where you actually live. The distance slider is Premium, so a state is as close as free search gets.
- Count instead of browsing. Scroll a few screens and count how many profiles in your state have a photo and were active recently. Write the number down before you look at faces, and decide in advance what count would make a paid month worth trying.
- Spend the winks. You get 20 a day for three days, then 40 a day. A wink back tells you the account is live. It does not open a conversation, because that still needs one of you on Premium.
- Leave the inbox alone for a week. Premium members can write to you, and you reply free. If a week passes with nothing in it, that is real information about your area, and it cost nothing.
- Decide, and set the exit before you pay. The refund window is 3 business days from the day you subscribe, and auto renewal is on until you switch it off. Turn it off the same day you buy, while you still remember.
The full free versus paid list, with the FAQ wording behind each line, is on is SeniorMatch free.
Questions people ask about free senior dating sites
Are there any truly free senior dating sites?
The phrase covers four different deals. Facebook Dating has no paid tier at all, though a full chat opens only after the other person likes you back. Plenty of Fish and Match are free to use and open messaging on the same mutual-like condition. eharmony gives a free Basic member first messages and caps how many. SeniorMatch, SilverSingles, OurTime and Stitch keep the first message behind a payment, theirs or the other person's. We checked all eight between 16 and 18 September 2026.
Is there a dating site for people over 50 that needs no payment at all?
Of the eight we checked, only Facebook Dating has no subscription to buy. It is part of the Facebook app, it is 18 and over, and it needs a Facebook account in good standing that is at least 30 days old. Plenty of Fish, Match, OurTime and eharmony all sell subscriptions and none of them print the price on a public page; you see the number after you register.
What is the best free dating site for seniors over 60?
If the point is to message people without paying, Facebook Dating and Plenty of Fish are the two that let you. If the point is a room where everyone is over 50, Stitch is the only one of the eight whose terms set a minimum age of 50, though its free tier cannot start member chat. AARP's survey of 300 adults aged 50 and older found 41 percent of users "encountered a fake profile or a person trying to scam them", so budget time for that on any of them.
Which free senior dating apps have the best ratings?
App ratings do not tell you what a free account can do, and the number often counts something other than the dating app. On 17 September 2026 the iOS listings read, to one decimal as the store shows them: Plenty of Fish 4.3 from 1,808,571 ratings, eharmony 4.1 from 48,783, OurTime 3.9 from 69,021, SeniorMatch 3.8 from 2,240, Stitch 3.6 from 73. Facebook Dating has no listing of its own; the 4.5 you may see is the whole Facebook app.
Is a senior dating app free to use?
It depends which one, and on what you mean by free. Every service here lets you register and look without paying. The step that costs money is almost always the first message: four of the eight block it outright for free members, two open it only after a mutual like, and two allow it with limits: eharmony caps how many messages a free member sends, and Facebook Dating opens a full chat only after a like back. Check the messaging rule before the download, not the star rating.
Is SeniorMatch free?
A free SeniorMatch account can hold 26 public and 26 private photos, search by country and state, send 20 winks a day for the first three days and 40 a day after that, and reply to any Premium member who writes first. It cannot start a conversation, and it cannot use the distance slider, so free search narrows to a country and a state. Lifting both limits costs $33.99 a month, read at checkout on 16 September 2026.
How this page was checked, and what it could not check
SeniorMatch and SilverSingles were read from inside accounts on 16 September 2026: the checkout pages, the advanced filter panel, the privileges lists and the settings. Elena holds both accounts. The SeniorMatch one is a Premium account provided for this review, and the disclosure page explains who is credited when you register through our link.
The other six services were read logged out on 17 September 2026, from their own terms, help centers and pricing pages. The Facebook Dating help articles quoted above were read logged out on 18 September 2026.
App ratings come from the iTunes lookup API for the United States store on 17 September 2026. They move day to day, so treat them as a reading rather than a fixed score.

Cells we left marked not verified, and why. Browsing for OurTime, Match and Stitch: their public pages describe messaging and events without saying in words that a free member may look through member profiles. Distance filtering for all six of the services we hold no account on: none of their public pages describes a distance or age range filter, and we would rather leave a gap than fill it from a marketing page.
What this page does not tell you: reply rates, how many members are near you, or what any service's free tier feels like after a month. We did not message members on any service, and we did not open accounts on the six public ones.
